Kalamaki is a popular seaside village in southern Crete, just 64 kilometers from Heraklion, and close to places of great archaeological and tourist interest such as Phaistos, Gortyna, Kommos, Agiofarago, Agia Galini, and Matala.
Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for excursions to traditional villages, archaeological sites, and many of the stunning beaches along the southern coastline.
The village stretches along the vast beach of the Messara Bay – the largest beach in southern Crete. This sandy shoreline, with views of the Paximadia islets, is a true gem of the area, known for its tranquility, privacy, and exceptional natural beauty.
Part of it includes Kommos Beach, famous and protected due to the presence of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta-Caretta. If you’re lucky, you may spot nests or even watch tiny hatchlings making their first journey to the sea.
Kalamaki doesn’t have a long history – the settlement began to develop after 1970 – yet its charm lies in its simplicity. With tavernas, cafés, and accommodations lining the shore, it offers all the comforts of a seaside destination while preserving a relaxed, welcoming pace.
Here, summer seems to last longer: the sea, the magical sunset, and the serene atmosphere create the perfect setting to leave everyday stress behind.
You can enjoy your meal by the water’s edge or relax with a glass of wine on your balcony, as the sun paints the sky with warm golden and amber hues.
